With such an illustrious history of excellent erotica to live up to, we are naturally very choosy about who gets to shoot for Viv Thomas – only the best will do for our highly discerning members.
So I’m delighted to welcome our talented new team, Nik Fox and Tom Veller, who made their Viv Thomas debut this month with the delightful “Sunshine Lovers.” It combines gorgeous cinematography with a stunning cast – Cristal Caitlin, Lilu Moon, Emylia Argan, Miki Torrez, Angel Piaff, Lady Dee and Lexi Dona – and a sense of fun and genuine sexual chemistry, to create a powerful first impression. We hope you will be as smitten with Nik and Tom’s stylish and seductive movies as we are!
While new to us, the guys bring a wealth of experience to their movies. I asked Nik to tell us a little more about their work.
Nik, where are you from, and where do you shoot your movies?
NF: I’m from London and my partner Tom Veller is from Prague. We mainly shoot in Europe, at the moment in Prague or Spain.
What is your background in film and photography?
NF: I studied my Film Degree at Central Saint Martins in London, and then my Masters in Film elsewhere. I originally worked in TV news and then moved over to Adult where I have been for over 17 years.
Tom started as a photographer for Silvia Saint in 2005 and then went on to work as a glamour and erotic photographer for many of the Czech stars and big companies, having made hundreds of sets for MetArt in the past (as Tim Fox).
Can you tell us about your directing partnership – who does what?
NF: Tom is the Photographer and I am the Director/Cameraman, although it has to be said we discuss all ideas and concepts way before we shoot, on FaceTime most days as we live in separate countries. On set we both sit down and talk to models with ideas and both have equal input throughout the day, so Director is a loose term for us.
After Tom and I left a big adult company we were both working for, we decided to join forces. Tom and I are a perfect partnership when it comes to ethos, work ethic, respect for models, creativity and always thinking about what we believe members would want to see, this is very important to us.
We have a mutual bond and respect for each other, this is a professional relationship grown from being together in an intense environment for many years creating beautiful scenes. Tom and I trust each other, which for me is a massive attribute to any partnership, and we know when we are at our best together we are hard to beat.
We use models we know and respect due to their work ethic and ethos, and models know how we work and what we expect from them, and they respect us for it, therefore giving us their all on set as they all know we need real energy and intense passion. With luck this creates a final product everyone including them is proud of.
How long have you been creating erotic photographs and movies, and what inspired you to start?
NF: I was working for a large news agency in London as a Cameraman/Editor when I met a guy at the gym who had a friend who was in need of an editor. After meeting the guy I started editing for him and going to shoots helping out with adult films for DVD release for a massive adult company at the time. I soon realized that I could do a better job than the Director/Cameraman he had, so he gave me a chance and then it started, before I knew it I was editing every day and also filming for him.
Through him I met another Director called Tanya Hyde, with whom I continued for years and made 70 fetish films. Tanya taught me a lot about shooting angles, making a model look incredible through styling and makeup, and also taught me how to have fun with the models and get the best from them without being disrespectful or crossing the line. Tanya is still in my life today as a very good friend and someone I love very much.
From then I worked for all the big players in the adult industry, as well as many small ones who are just as memorable. I have been lucky to have been working a six day week for the past 17 years in this industry, and I’m privileged to have been able to have done so.
Are you influenced by mainstream art, film and photography?
NF: I am influenced by anything I see on TV or film that is beautiful or interesting. Anything with emotion and intimacy, interesting lighting and stand-out cinematography. I can see something when walking down the street that will spark an idea in my head and I will quickly FaceTime Tom to tell him about it, as he often does with me. I take particular inspiration from Richard Kern’s and Trevor Watson’s photographic work, both photographers and visual artists I respect. Also of late, Tom’s work is great as his personality helps capture models in those magic seconds when the pose, look and vibe is just right, creating a gorgeous photograph. I guess to an extent I am influenced subconsciously by many things I see in everyday life, which my mind filters and files away and then uses when creating a movie.
Do you prefer studio or location shoots?
NF: I prefer to shoot on location, as it’s always a nice surprise to find a new location and see what ideas it throws up and what sexual situations it can help create. Studios to me are lifeless and hold no reality or atmosphere, unless I’m filming a fantasy fetish vibe, which sometimes needs an environment like that. BUT if you get two girls who are genuinely into each other you could film them anywhere, it wouldn’t matter as it would be magic to film.
Is there a model who inspires you the most?
NF: Two models who stand out lately are Emylia Argan and Alexis Crystal, both of whom have lovely personalities and also have a true love for passionate, intense girl-on-girl sex. Both of them love girls and it means we can work closely with them to create intensely beautiful work, which every now and then has moments of absolute magic in it. They are both always happy and willing to work very hard, and are kind, warm girls, perfect for Viv Thomas.
Do you plan your shoots in great detail, or see how it evolves on the day?
NF: We work out every detail before we shoot with regards to scenarios, ideas, styling, location, and overall concept for a movie, and what models go well together. But on the day I will gauge who is feeling what and maybe change ideas a little or, for example, change an intro because a beam of sun I didn’t realize would be shining through a window at a particular time is doing so.
We sit with models before a shoot and Tom and I talk to them about what we want. Most times I will let the models feel their way through a scene and find their own way to sensuality and real orgasms, something that is of upmost importance to us. So basically we pre-arrange everything but the chemistry; that should come naturally and be allowed to manifest itself through mutual admiration, hopefully creating a beautiful, intense and honest scene that viewers will enjoy.
Do you work with a stylist or do your own styling?
NF: We do our own styling but always speak to the team to see if we have missed something or if someone has a better idea. We also ask the models what they like wearing if they bring their own clothes, and what makes them feel sexy, as this will help the scene if a model feels comfortable with herself before we shoot.
What are your ambitions for your work with Viv Thomas? Did you know the site before you started directing for it?
NF: Yes I knew the site as I have been a fan of Andrej Lupin’s work for a while, his intros are pure magic and of cinematic beauty. We would like to become one of the main directing teams for Viv Thomas, and work with the MetArt team to create beautiful, real and intimate movies for many years to come.
What do you hope the viewers get from your work?
NF: I hope the viewers feel part of the shoot and enjoy the beautiful photos and movies we strive to create, I hope they find them beautiful and erotically wonderful and make them feel happy… and I guess sexy as well! We are honoured to have been given the chance to film for this prestigious company, whose work ethos and ethic is very much the same as ours. We will do whatever we can to make the sort of work the Viv Thomas viewers will want to see.
